Pracha Hutanuwatr was an ordained monk in Thailand for eleven years, and considers himself a lifelong student of Buddhadasa Bhikku.
He is the author of four books in Thai (A Biography of Buddhadasa; Meditation and Social Service; Spirituality and the Search of the New Generation; To Be a Rebel), one in English (The Asian Future Volumes I & II, co-authored with Ramu Manivannan), and has translated books by Thich Nhat Hanh and Suzuki Roshi from English into Thai.
He is a leading practitioner of engaged buddhism. He was a co-founder of the International Network of Engaged Buddhists, and has been a deputy director of the Santi Pracha Dhamma Institute, a director of Wongsanit Ashram, and the director of the Grassroots Leadership Training Programme. Read more about these and other engaged buddhist initiatives in Thailand and elsewhere at http://www.sulak-sivaraksa.org/en/
He is currently the director of the Young Awakening Institute and the deputy director of the Right Livelihood Foundation, while also working as a freelance writer, translator and educational facilitator. An article by Pracha, “Globalisation from a buddhist perspective,” is available online at http://warc.ch/pc/rw002/04.html.
Pracha has done training in non-violent action for social change in the US and UK, and has been involved in actions for peace, justice and the environment in Thailand, the UK and Sri Lanka. He has also taught meditation to activists.
Pracha's retreats will embody his unique combination of training in meditation in the Buddhist heartland, and reaching out into the world with his work for peace and justice.
His visit to New Zealand will be co-ordinated by Christine Dann. To find out more about the retreats he will be offering send Christine an email.
